The Trans Maritime Tour
A 6 day All Mountain, fully supported point to point adventure exploring Liguria and Piemonte in Italy then crossing over to Provence in France through incredible terrain from high alpine and lush forests before finishing along the terraced hills above the Mediterranean. A true blend of adventure and adrenaline in some of the wildest terrain you will ever find in Europe.
A Typical Intinerary
The Itinerary below is an example but can be lengthened or shortened to suit each groups needs, the Maritime Alps are a true wilderness and little traffic passes through these parts. It can take more time to traverse, climb and descend compared to the main Alpine regions, but this remoteness gives a true feeling of adventure and the long natural descents will give you more than your RDA of adrenaline.
Day 1 – Arrival
You will be collected at Nice Airport and taken to the beach resort town of Finale Ligure where we will stay at a beach front hotel. The rest of the day will give you chance to settle in. We will have a trip briefing and you will meet the guides and time to assemble the bikes etc..
Day 2 – Finale Ligure – Ormea
The day will start with a shuttle bus to Melognio, from here we will spend the morning warming up on Finale’s trails as well as an EWS stage or two. This will give us a good opportunity to warm up, test the bikes and get ourselves adjusted for the week ahead. After lunch in a mountain trattoria we will make our way to the next stop with two amazing swoopy trails and a single climb will bring us to Ormea for the evening.
Day 3 – Ormea – Upega
Today we ride high in to the Marguareis and we start with the shuttle bus up until the asphalt road finishes at 1,450m. we continue to climb the dirt road until we arrive near the summit of Pizzo d’Ormea at 2,300m. After a quick bite, we traverse the behind the ridge which includes some shouldering until we start of our descent at 2,500m. From here a stunning singletrack will take us 17km all the way to Upega at 800m.
Day 4 – Upega – Tende
We start the day with a shuttle to Monesi, a small ski resort on the north side of Saccarello. From here we climb further and then follow the via del sale (salt road) which traverses it’s way gently around the ridge until we reach the summit of Col de Tende on the French/Italian border. Here you will see many huge Napoleonic Forts, in fact the whole network of roads was built by Napoleon’s army. We skirt around the ridge and then take the singletrack on the south flank….a stunning ride of nearly 20km of continuous singletrack that will take us to Tende 800m asl.. We will stay in a local hotel in the centre of town.
Day 5 – Tende – Molini di Triora
We will start the day with a descent and then shuttle up to the magnificent reservoir – Lac Mesches at 1,800m. The descent is a mix of fast loamy turns and very tight switchbacks on a cliff edge that will take us down to the valley floor. We then climb or shuttle the 1,000m back to the Italian border and a further 500m up to Cime di Marta at 2,135m asl.. From here is a stunning flat out 12km descent to Triora, a beautiful medieval town, we then make our way down a picturesque mule trail into Molini and we will stay the night at the Albergo Santo Spirito.
Day 6 – Molini di Triora – Coll Caprauna
Today we will circumnavigate the mighty Val Argentina, a 1,500m climb awaits us (some of this can be assisted by the shuttle bus) until we reach the highest point in Liguria, Mt Saccarello at 2,230m asl. Initially we follow the ridge line singletrack which then descends in total a massive 1,800m down to the valley floor, a mix of exposure, loam and tobbogan runs await… We will then either climb or shuttle to our next stop for the night – a mountain refuge high above the Med.
Day 7 – Coll Caprauna – Alassio (Alp to Sea)
We will start from the Col at 1,700m above the Med far in the distance. The trail follows a ridge that undulates in places and will bring us to the walled medieval town of Villanova. An hour climb (or shorter shuttle) will see us above the coastline and a fast descent will bring us to the beautiful seaside town of Alassio for that well earned beer and gelato.
Day 8 – Departure
We will leave Alassio at approx noon for the 1.5 hr trip back to Nice Airport.
The trails on this tour are for the advanced mountain biker where a good level of fitness and endurance as well as technical skill are required. Expect challenging and technical singletrack and some exposure. In sections you will need to carry your bike, there will also be river crossings and depending on the season there may be snow wedges to cross. During the trip there will be options to do some shuttle runs and to bypass some of the longer physical climbs.
Accommodation varies from 3 star hotels on the Riviera to bunks in a mountain refuge. In the mountain refuges there are surcharges for bed sacks, so we recommend you bring your own. We will stay in refuges for 3 nights and although during quieter periods they can cater for separate male/female bedrooms on busy nights the rooms may be of mixed sex. There are separate male and female bathrooms. You will stay at hotels for 4 nights and these will be twin rooms with en-suite facilities.
Transport & Support
Our tours are fully supported by our 4×4 bus. All your luggage will be transported for you, so all you need to take is your own bike and backpack. During the trip there will be options to do some shuttle runs and to bypass some of the longer physical climbs. With a 4×4 this means we can get your luggage to even the most remote of refuges.
The Trans Maritime tour runs during the summer months from June until September.
It is possible to run variations of this tour outside of the summer months.
