The Itinerary below is an example of the 6 day option but can be adjusted to suit each group’s needs.
Day 1 – Arrival
You will be collected at Nice Airport and taken to your accommodation in the Provencal town of Sospel at 400m. The rest of the day will give you chance to settle in, assemble the bikes, meet the guides and have a trip briefing.
Day 2 – Val Roya, Sospel – CasterinoDistance 36km - Ascent 900m - Descent 4000m
The first day will involve travelling up the mighty Val Roya which is the natural border between France and Italy. We will ride the trails along the flanks and the spurs of the valley utilising the shuttle truck as much as possible. Expect massive 1000m + descents on a mix of terrain. We will stay in a lovely Rifugio in the small hamlet of Casterino 1500m high in the heart of the Maritime Alps.
Day 3 – Casterino – UpegaDistance 30km - Ascent 1200m - Descent 2000m
We will make our way along the via del Sale, a route built along the ridgeline and into the Marguareis Mountain range of Piemonte, Italy. Today we will reach the highest point of the trip at over 2600m. The route is littered with Napoleonic Forts and remnants of old military installations. The route eventually brings us to the head of the Tanaro Valley where we will ride a super flow trail to our next destination, a lovely rifugio in a small village of Upega at 700m.
Day 4 – Upega – MoliniDistance 34km - Ascent 1300m - Descent 2800m
We start the day with a 900m climb in the shuttle bus and we will then pedal up to Liguria’s highest point, Mt Saccarello at 2200m with stunning views down the Val Argentina and further to the Med. We continue along the ridge and then descend a stunning high speed loamy trail; a further climb takes us back to the ridge before a huge 1500m vert descent to our next stop – Molini di Triora at 450m.
Day 5 Molini di Triora – Santo Stefano (Alp to Sea)Distance 42km - Ascent 800m - Descent 2900m
Today we ride to the sea and start with a 1000m climb in the shuttle before doing a stunning ridgeline trail to the town of Badalucco at 200m in the lower Val Argentina. After an espresso we take the shuttle bus up to 1300m and ride a ridgeline trail down to the town of Dolcedo at 100m. After lunch we will ride a few more trails before finally arriving at the picturesque seaside village of Santo Stefano for a well-earned dip in the sea and of course a gelato. Our accommodation will be in a 4* hotel near the beach front and a massive surf and turf meal at a local restaurant to finish off the trip.
Day 6 – Departure
Transfers back to Nice airport
Accommodation varies from 4 star hotels on the Riviera to small but comfortable hotels in the mountain villages. We may also stay in a mountain refuge where there are surcharges for bed sacks, so we recommend you bring your own, also during quieter periods they can cater for separate male/female bedrooms, on busy nights the rooms may be of mixed sex. There are separate male and female bathrooms. The accommodation in the main towns will be twin rooms with en-suite toilet and shower facilities.
Transport & Support
Our tours are fully supported by our 4×4 bus. All your luggage will be transported for you, so all you need to take is your own bike and backpack. During the trip there will be options to do some shuttle runs and to bypass some of the longer physical climbs. With a 4×4 this means we can get your luggage to even the most remote of refuges.
The trails on this tour are for the advanced mountain biker where a good level of fitness and endurance as well as technical skill are required. Expect challenging and technical singletrack and some exposure. In sections you will need to carry your bike, there will also be river crossings and depending on the season there may be snow wedges to cross. During the trip there will be options to do some shuttle runs and to bypass some of the longer physical climbs.
The Trans Maritime tour runs during the summer months from June until September. It is possible to run variations of this tour outside of this period
